PROJECT SWELL REMOTE LEARNING CURRICULUM
WEATHER AND CLIMATE
WATERSHEDS AND WATER POLLUTION
In our third grade module, students learn the differences between weather and climate and model sea level rise using household materials. Then, they explore the ways birds have adapted to San Diego’s unique habitats and changing climate on a virtual field trip to Manzanita Canyon. The module concludes with students creating decorative light switch covers to promote energy conservation.

PRE-SURVEY
Before beginning the module, students take a brief pre-survey to gauge their environmental knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. Surveys take 3-5 minutes to complete; students do not need an account to participate.
VIDEO LESSON
In the Project SWELL Third Grade Video Lesson, students learn about the difference between weather and climate.
VIDEO ACTIVITY
In the Project SWELL Third Grade Video Activity, students participate in a hands-on activity where they model sea level rise using household materials.
Be sure to refer to this activity checklist prior to watching the video to make sure you are prepared for the activity.
BONUS VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP
In this virtual field trip, students join Canyonlands Naturalist Kindra on a walk through Manzanita Canyon, where we learn about adaptations in local birds. Manzanita Canyon is in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, and part of the Pueblo Watershed.
POST-SURVEY
At the end of the module, students take the post-survey to gauge any change in their environmental knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. To request a copy of your class survey results for your own evaluation, please email [email protected].
