PROJECT SWELL REMOTE LEARNING CURRICULUM
FIFTH GRADE
WATER CONSERVATION
In our fifth grade module, students learn how water is distributed on Earth, how this affects San Diego’s drinking water supply, and why it is important to conserve water. Then, they attend a virtual field trip to learn about the water cycle in a local canyon and create PSAs to encourage water conservation in their community.
Included on this page, you will find:
- The pre-survey
- The lesson plan
- The video lesson
- The video activity
- The activity checklist
- The activity book
- A bonus virtual field trip video
- The post-survey
PRE-SURVEY
Before beginning the module, students take a brief pre-survey to gauge their environmental knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. Surveys take 3-5 minutes to complete; students do not need an account to participate.
VIDEO LESSON
In the Project SWELL Fifth Grade Video Lesson, students learn about how water is distributed on Earth and how this affects San Diego’s drinking water supply.
VIDEO ACTIVITY
In the Project SWELL Fifth Grade Video Activity, students participate in a hands-on activity where they use containers to understand how water is distributed and stored across the planet in the ocean, ice, groundwater, and freshwater.
Be sure to refer to this activity checklist prior to watching the video to make sure you are prepared for the activity.
BONUS VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP
In this virtual field trip, students join Canyonlands Naturalist Kindra on a walk through Manzanita Canyon to learn about the water cycle. Manzanita Canyon is in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, and part of the Pueblo Watershed.
POST-SURVEY
At the end of the module, students take the post-survey to gauge any change in their environmental knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. To request a copy of your class survey results for your own evaluation, please email [email protected].
