Camila joined San Diego Coastkeeper as the Community Science Coordinator in August 2025, after nearly a year of volunteering with the organization. Originally from Medellín, Colombia, she also spent much of her childhood in Miami, Florida, where she developed a deep appreciation for the ocean and coastal ecosystems. Growing up near the beaches of South Florida and the Everglades National Park sparked her early curiosity about how environments shape the lives of people and wildlife, and how, in turn, people impact the health of those ecosystems.
Her passion for conservation deepened while living in Medellín, where she was inspired by Colombia’s incredible biodiversity and the close relationship between nature and urban life. She earned a B.S. in Biology from the University of California, Riverside, where she became active in environmental clubs and developed a strong interest in field work. After moving to San Diego, she began volunteering with local environmental nonprofits to gain hands-on experience and
contribute meaningfully to her community.
At Coastkeeper, her work focuses on community Water Quality Monitoring programs across Mission Bay, Chollas Creek, the San Diego River, and San Diego Bay. This includes sample collection, data reporting, and outreach, all in support of safe, clean water and healthy ecosystems. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, reading, crocheting, and exploring new places.
