SAN DIEGO, March 2, 2010- San Diego Coastkeeper, San Diego’s largest professional
environmental organization working to protect coastal waters, launches its quarterly Signs of
the Tide public forum on Thursday, April 1, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. The world-café-style
discussions will cover timely and important issues relating to San Diego’s water, focusing on
science education in schools for its inaugural event at Elementary Institute of Science, located at
608 51st St., San Diego, Calif., 92114.

“Signs of the Tide are community events designed to educate, engage and empower
participants in issues relating to the health of San Diego’s coastal waters,” said Coastkeeper
Executive Director Bruce Reznik. “Through Project SWELL, we bring environmental science
education to more than 50,000 school kids each year, so science education in schools is an
important part of our mission to protect San Diego’s water.“

At the April 1 Signs of the Tide, Voice of San Diego Education Reporter Emily Alpert will
moderate a panel consisting of SDUSD Board of Education President Richard Barrera, XXXX,
and XXXXX. The evening includes an hour of presentations from the three experts followed by
a half hour of small group discussions.

Coastkeeper selected science education in schools as its first topic after Reznik convened and
chaired a Blue Ribbon Task Force (BRTF) to create recommendations for the San Diego Unified
School District Board of Education to help ensure strong science in schools. The BRTF presented
its recommendations in December 2009, and Coastkeeper continues its involvement in the
implementation process this year.

Coastkeeper scheduled its three other Signs of the Tide on June 3, August 26 and November 4.
The meetings will rotate locations in San Diego and topics are to be determined. All events are
open to the community.
