2024 Border BioBlitz Discovery Day

FreeThe 2024 Border BioBlitz Discovery Day is an event dedicated to celebrating biodiversity and fostering cross-border environmental collaboration. The event will be held at the Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center in Imperial Beach on Sunday, May 5th, from 8:00 am-3:00 pm, and promises to be an enriching experience for participants of all ages. Partners will have tables set up from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm. This event will be an engaging and educational experience for all attendees, highlighting the rich biodiversity and conservation efforts in the region.
This event serves as the kick-off for the Border BioBlitz, which spans the entire month of May along the borderlands from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico on both sides of the border.
This event is possible through collaboration with Botanical Community Development Initiatives, the San Diego Natural History Museum, Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, California State Parks, and the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Border BioBlitz 2024: Discovery Day – Tentative Schedule
8:00am-9:45am: Border BioBlitzing – iNaturalist Workshop and Walk
• Led by Hector Valtierra and USFWS’s Nancy Fernandez, this session will introduce
participants to the iNaturalist app, enabling them to document and identify local wildlife
and plant species. Attendees will explore the Tijuana Estuary and contribute valuable
data to conservation efforts.
10:00am-11:00am: Bird Walk
• Join us for a guided bird walk to observe and learn about the diverse bird species in the
estuary, enhancing your birdwatching skills and understanding of avian life.
10:30am-1:30pm: Community Engagement with Partners and Hands-On Activities
• We invite you to bring engaging activities for participants of all ages! This session
provides a platform for interactive experiences that promote environmental awareness
and conservation efforts.
1:00pm-2:00pm: Cross-Border Biologist Talks
• Hear from biologists working across the border, highlighting collaborative conservation
and research initiatives. Gain insights into the ecological significance of the Tijuana
Estuary and the importance of cross-border environmental cooperation.
2:00pm-3:00pm: Border BioBlitzing – iNaturalist Workshop and Walk
• Join SDNHM Canyoneer Linda and Hector for an in-depth exploration of the iNaturalist
platform and its role in citizen science and conservation.
