PROJECT SWELL REMOTE LEARNING CURRICULUM
SECOND GRADE
WATERSHEDS
In the second grade module, students learn what a watershed is and how water interacts with land, and create a DIY watershed model with household materials. After completing a fun activity book and attending a virtual field trip to Swan Canyon, they will identify watershed features in their neighborhood with a fun bingo game.
Included on this page, you will find:
- The pre-survey
- The lesson plan
- The video lesson
- The video activity
- The activity checklist
- The activity book
- A bonus virtual field trip video
- The post-survey
PRE-SURVEY
Before beginning the module, students take a brief pre-survey to gauge their environmental knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. Surveys take 3-5 minutes to complete; students do not need an account to participate.
VIDEO LESSON
In the Project SWELL Second Grade Video Lesson, students learn about watersheds: what they are, where they are, and who lives in them.
VIDEO ACTIVITY
n the Project SWELL Second Grade Video Activity, students build their own watershed – giving them a hands on way to understand how watersheds work, and why all the communities, people, animals, and habitats in them are connected.
Be sure to refer to this activity checklist prior to watching the video to make sure you are prepared for the activity.
BONUS VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP
In this virtual field trip, students join Canyonlands Naturalist Kindra on a walk through Swan Canyon, where we are on the lookout for the plants, birds, and insects that call this area home. Swan Canyon is in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, and part of the Pueblo Watershed!
POST-SURVEY
At the end of the module, students take the post-survey to gauge any change in their environmental knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. To request a copy of your class survey results for your own evaluation, please email [email protected].
