We believe every student in San Diego should have access to engaging, hands-on, science and stewardship learning experiences. After all, it is in the best interest of all San Diegans if our youngest generation grows up with a comprehensive understanding of the environmental challenges we face, and the tools they need to address them.

That is why we developed Water Education For All (WEFA), an online water and climate science curriculum available to all formal and informal educators across San Diego County. With WEFA, educators are provided free access to lessons, supplies, and teaching support. The lessons are available in both English and Spanish, and can be adapted for grades K-12.

Since 2015, WEFA has reached more than 5,510 students, teachers, and community members. We aim to empower educators to integrate water and climate science in their classrooms so that together we can bring high-quality science education to students in communities throughout San Diego County.

The Curriculum

Water Education For All lessons are arranged in topics for easy access. Educators can find lesson plans about watersheds, water quality monitoring, marine debris, animal adaptations, natural disasters, water conservation, weather, and climate, all locally relevant and developed in alignment with Next Generation Science Standards. The lessons engage students in science activities and empower them to take action to protect our waters, reduce pollution, and mitigate climate change.

WEFA lessons are available to both formal and informal educators, and are suitable for teaching in museums, libraries, or outdoor education programs. The lessons guide practitioners in using everyday materials to conduct hands-on activities and provide talking points to help create conservation messaging. Each lesson includes a PowerPoint presentation with slide notes, images, and kid-friendly science illustrations to facilitate instruction.

WEFA materials

Educators interested in using the curriculum are welcome to borrow our Water Education For All traveling kit — for free. It has all the supplies you need to teach WEFA lessons, including water quality monitoring test kits, beach cleanup trash grabbers, materials to build watershed models, and more. Please note, if you are organizing a beach cleanup with your students we are happy to provide the supplies, but you may also need to acquire a permit from the agency that manages the beach you will be visiting, especially if you have a group of over 25 people participating. Our beach cleanup team may be able to answer questions or point you in the right direction.
