Nicole joined San Diego Coastkeeper in February 2025 as a Community Science Intern.

Growing up on the beaches of Brazil, water has always been a central part of her life. After earning her undergraduate degree from CSU East Bay, she pursued a Master’s in Public Health at San Diego State University, specializing in Environmental Health Science. Through rigorous coursework and hands-on research, she discovered a strong passion for water quality and the impact of environmental toxicants on public health.

Her current research focuses on children’s exposure to thirdhand smoke toxicants in household dust through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal absorption. Passionate about environmental health, she is committed to addressing hazards that affect communities, protecting biodiversity, and preserving ecosystems. She strongly believes in the One Health approach, recognizing the deep interconnectedness between human, animal, and the environment. Excited to apply her knowledge in a real-world setting, she is eager to contribute to efforts that ensure access to safe clean water for all.

Outside of work, Nicole enjoys spending time at the beach, hiking, rock climbing, and backpacking in the backcountry.
