Stormwater Monitoring

In the winter months when San Diego receives most of its annual rainfall, Coastkeeper activates a weather-responsive stormwater sampling team. When it starts to rain, our on-call stormwater monitors pull on rubber boots and raincoats and heads out to local rivers and streams to collect samples in areas we suspect are disproportionately impacted by urban or industrial runoff. By monitoring polluted discharges into our waterways from government facilities and private industry, our advocacy team is better able to understand the threats posed to our waters by pollution, which in turn informs our legal work to engage with polluters and protect local water quality. You can read more about our legal and advocacy work here.
