Environmental Education in San Diego

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

We can’t save San Diego’s ocean alone—children are tomorrow’s ocean superheroes.

That’s why we invest in environmental education for San Diego school children, their families and the general public.

A majority of San Diegans live close to the ocean, but a large number never get to explore our local beaches, ocean and waterways. Few residents understand the role we all play in contributing to the dangerous pollution levels of our bays, watersheds and ocean, and the fact that everyone in San Diego should play a part in restoring the county’s environmental health.

San Diego Coastkeeper empowers San Diegans to reverse deteriorating water quality and coastal health trends by educating children and the community to protect and restore our environment and waterways. We accomplish this through Project SWELL, environmental science curricula for K-12 students; environmental internships; San Diego volunteer opportunities; and community outreach and events.

San Diego’s Environmental Education Summit

San Diego Coastkeeper recognizes the value of collaboration and shared resources in the educational field. That’s why we plan to coordinate an environmental education summit that brings together educators, agencies and non-profit groups offering environmental education programs.

The goal of this event is to promote interaction among these groups to improve current programs and explore collaboration opportunities to maximize the effectiveness of individual education efforts. In addition, we aim to have discussions about how classroom best practices, program planning strategies, community education programs and prospective collaboration will lead to improvements in both Project SWELL and environmental education programs across San Diego County.
