San Diego Coastkeeper’s 13th Annual Ocean Gala

Ocean Gala Greening the Gala

At San Diego Coastkeeper, we believe that everyday choices we make, both as individuals and as an organization, can cumulatively have a significant impact on our environment. Therefore, we continue striving to make our Ocean Gala as eco-friendly as possible. Of course, we recognize that we can always improve, and welcome your suggestions on further greening the Gala in future yours. Some ways in which we are making our 2008 Gala a green event include:

Printing
Materials printed for the Ocean Gala have come from green printers. The Save The Date and Invitation were printed by Greener Printer on 100% recycled content, 50% post-consumer waste, processed chlorine-free paper using soy and vegetable-based ink at a clean energy facility using 100% wind power. The invitations were printed by Rush Press, an FSC and Rainforest Alliance certified printer. Printed with soy-based inks on 100% recycled paper, 25% post-consumer waste, even the vellum envelopes used are FSC certified and recyclable. The event program was printed by James Gang on recycled paper, 30% post-consumer paper and printed using soy-based ink.

Food & Wine
The dinner being served at the Gala comes from sustainable and organic vendors, including meat from Snake River Farms and vegetables from Natures Produce. The wine being served has been donated by Quivira Vineyards, which is an organic and sustainable vineyard that uses Biodynamic farming. Beer served during the VIP reception was donated by New Belgium, which utilizes green design throughout their building, uses wind power and aims to reduce their carbon footprint more each year.

Auction
Coastkeeper has sought to focus our silent and live auctions on green products and services, outdoor experiences and artwork that celebrate our beautiful coastal environment. Some examples of eco-friendly auction items include a gourmet dinner-for-ten package from four award-winning executive chefs with a shared commitment to local, sustainable and organic food choices; and an eco-friendly surfing package that includes an all-natural Biofoam surfboard, a Patagonia wetsuit made from recycled products, a bamboo board bag and a bamboo skateboard from Arbor Skateboards and 40 bars of soy-based wax.

Program
Other elements of the Gala program also incorporate green elements, such as the use of orchids, rather than cut flowers, for our centerpieces, and the Coastkeeper Wheel of Fun which has been formed from recycled wood scraps.

Coastkeeper Apparel and Products
When visiting the Coastkeeper booth, you will also see our commitment to promoting green products, such as Coastkeeper apparel, which is made from 100% organic cotton, our recycled tote bags which can be used to reduce the use of paper or plastic when shopping for groceries and composted when it has lost its use, or our newest item – reusable water bottles that can eliminate the need for single-use plastic bottles that fill up our landfills and harm our oceans.
