San Diego Coastkeeper

ASBS Projects

The La Jolla Shores Coastal Watershed Management Plan is a collaborative watershed approach that will be used to institute effective and efficient strategies to protect Areas of Special Biological Significance (ASBS) and address non-point source pollution within the urban watershed that covers areas of the San Diego community of La Jolla and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

San Diego Coastkeeper is dedicated to the principle that protecting California’s precious coastal waters is the job of every citizen. Working together, we can all make a difference in achieving a clean, healthy ocean environment at La Jolla Shores.

The following objectives are encompassed in the La Jolla Shores Coastal Watershed Management Plan

  • Urban Runoff Management, to reduce the impacts of watershed pollutants and address the prohibition of waste discharge to ASBS.
  • Ocean Ecosystem Assessment, to identify the health of resources, the impact of runoff, and the effectiveness of management measures.
  • Information Systems, to develop a resource management tool serving a variety of end users.
  • Public Participation, to engage the public in the protection and management of resources.

Areas of Special Biological Significance (ASBS)

The La Jolla Shores Integrated Coastal Watershed Management Plan is complete and can be viewed on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s CORDC website.

The Plan reflects the use of the ASBS Protection Model developed collaboratively by the project partners. This model uses an integrated approach that looks not only at water quality within the watershed, but also impacts to the ocean ecosystem.

The Plan implements a scientific approach towards ocean protection and ecosystem-based management and promotes ocean stewardship which follows closely with the guidance and objectives of the following reports:

  • The California Ocean Protection Council’s Five-Year Strategic Plan, A Vision for out Ocean and Coast, 2006.
  • The West Coast Governor’s Agreement on Ocean Health, Draft Action Plan, October 2007.
  • An Agenda for Action, Moving Regional Ocean Governance from Theory to Practice, August 2007, and
  • Charting the Course for Ocean Science in the United States for the Next Decade, An Ocean Research Priorities Plan and Implementation Strategy, NSTC Joint Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology, January 2007.

We look forward to continuing to implement the projects outlined in this plan. For more information, please contact Kate Hanley at San Diego Coastkeeper or one of the project partners listed below:
