Auto Dismantlers

Coastkeeper continues to work to bring auto dismantlers in San Diego into compliance with California's Industrial Stormwater Permit. Coastkeeper reached settlement with several dismantlers in Otay Mesa (including Ecology Auto Wrecking, Street and Sons, Ingalls Properties, Rowland Properties) from 1997 through 1999. These cases were brought to ensure that companies were properly undertaking Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce pollution at their sites, including good housekeeping at these facilities, and installation of on-site treatment devices (know as structural BMPs).

Coastkeeper continues to be involved in oversight of these properties, including working with dismantlers to upgrade structural BMPs and review of monitoring data to ascertain compliance with the all permit requirements. In late 2001, Coastkeeper began working with the San Diego auto dismantler coalition to develop an industry-wide cooperative agreement to get all the region's dismantlers into compliance with water quality regulations.
