Monday mornings couldn’t get any better. Monday, Sept. 19, San Diego Coastkeeper’s staff had a very well deserved play day in La Jolla after a weekend of fun at Coastal Cleanup Day. What does an organization full of scientists, attorneys, accountants, conservationists and environmental enthusiasts do for fun? Well, they ditch the cubicles, put on their flippers and splash around in La Jolla’s ASBS (roughly from Scripps Institution of Oceanography to the caves at La Jolla Cove). Sounds a little nerdy, right? It’s actually one of the best places to swim alongside leopard sharks, seals and Garibaldi. To get out there we launched tandem from the end of Avenida de la Playa in our pretty blue kayaks, a courtesy of Hike Bike Kayak.  Never fear a cloudy morning in the end of summer – the water was warm(ish) and with wetsuits, also rented from the wonderful people at Hike Bike Kayak, we got pretty warm paddling out and swimming around. It would definitely be a great idea to go out for the first time with a guide or someone who knows the area very well since the swells can roll in slowly have a long lull in between, often easily mistaken as a calm day. Needless to say, the caves are remarkable. Whether you are a novice snorkeler or a Master Scuba Diver, our underwater parks are a miraculous must see. Maneuvering around can be a bit tricky and a down right tight squeeze at times, but it’s worth every moment.
