Ally Kawamoto

Marine Debris Coordinator

Ally Kawamoto joined San Diego Coastkeeper in 2018, as the organization’s marine debris coordinator. She oversees our marine debris outreach and community beach cleanup program.

Ally spent her childhood and education in England. She has always been active and outdoorsy, and enjoyed mountain biking, running and camping trips (in the rain!). After graduating with a BSc Natural Sciences from the University of Birmingham, Ally completed a summer internship at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She fell in love with San Diego, and made it a goal to come back here permanently one day. This dream became a reality when she returned to Scripps after obtaining a MSc Oceanography from the University of Southampton in 2004.

Ally’s passion for protecting the ocean and environment grew while at Scripps, and she started volunteering with community outreach and education programs whenever she had time. During her career, she has been involved with a variety of environmental organizations; from non-profits like the San Diego River Park Foundation, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, and Surfrider Foundation. She has worked at a local environmental consultancy and for California State Parks. She also spent a summer in British Columbia as a park naturalist at Mount Robson Provincial Park, where she enjoyed teaching and leading guided hikes in nature.

Ally makes the most of living in San Diego, and likes to hike, camp, rock climb and surf. She also loves to travel and during her career she has worked in Canada, Namibia, Hawaii and Antarctica.
